The Conversation

I've decided on a name
The North American Rockhoppers
I know the name has been taken. Rockhoppers in the real world are a small Sub-Antarctic species of Penguins. Little is known about my unusual ground species. At this time their nesting habits and breeding sites are unknown. And although mating rituals have not been observed it is believed they select one mate for their life time. I am hoping to do extensive study of this unique colorfully ground species.

Clay River Rocks and Pebbles

I really got excited about these hollow clay forms that were inspired from the naturally smooth river rocks we have here in Arizona. I made them from a white clay body and then applied various colored clay slips to the surface. When the colored slips were almost dry I stone polished each one and when the forms were bone dry I bisqued fired them. Concerned I might lose the color if I fired them again to the clay's maturity I choose to wax and polish again.

Hinges and Locks

I am fascinated with making clay hinges, locks, buckles and pulls that appear to be aged metal. This box is clay slab constructed with a wheel thrown top. The clay lock and side pulls are unglazed.

The wax resist technique that I used to create one part of this design reminds me of silk batik work. The bowl measures about 16" in diameter
